Every time I decorate a space I like to approach it with my senses . I really think the combination of all of the senses is what brings a room together. Well, when it comes to decorating it's more - so a combination of touch, smell, sound, and sight. Not so much taste...unless you’re in the kitchen!
It’s important to consider all of the senses while decorating because if one of them is off, it could throw the whole room off. Here are just a few ways you can incorporate your senses into the space you’re decorating!
Touch
- Think
texture
. In my opinion, the more textures a room has, the cozier it is. A room with more texture also has more visual interest. I like to add metals, woods, different fabrics, etc. to a space to give your eye something to feel visually. Because with texture, it not only is felt, it’s seen!
Smell - Sometimes smell can completely make a room. Light a candle or bake some cookies to bring in the coziness. [ I am partial to these ] And I think it’s important too, that the smell matches the room. For example, you might want to light a clean scented candle in the bathroom instead of one that smells like cupcakes. It’s a small detail to think about, but it’s a nice touch!
Sound
- Set the mood with music or complete silence, it’s up to you! Having fun cooking in the kitchen? Play some upbeat jams. Dino is the KING of setting the tone with the jams. Or are you winding down with a book for the night? Keep the distractions at bay with complete silence. Both silence and noise can be deafening so it’s important to take into consideration the mood you’re trying to set.
Sight
- This is probably the most obvious of the senses, but you want to set the tone where visually, you're happy, you're cozy, you're content.
Think about the feeling you are trying to portray! Does your space reflect that? Everything from the furniture to the paint color should be intentionally thought out in order to create the overall vision for the space that you have in your mind. And remember, nothing is permanent - especially paint. So switch it up for the season of life you are in...make it work with your overall esthetic. Or mood. Whatever makes you feel at home!
Next time you’re decorating a space, try to remember to decorate with your senses, the outcome will turn out better than you think!
